KCP have grown dramatically since we first met them in 2014 at Bauma China, Shanghai.
Our first meeting was to introduce their very reliable Concrete Pumps into the UK, nearly ten years on KCP Concrete Pumps are a common sight on UK construction site’s and growing in market share across Europe.
We continue to work closely with KCP in the Concrete Mixer business.
After a week in South Korea (our 6th now) here are some bite-sized reflections from the visit to their factories in Seoul and in Busan, some 5 hours drive south of the capital.
1. 360-Degree Design
On the first day, we spent a productive session with members of the team in charge of the design of the Volumetric Concrete Mixer (VCM).
We used our experience as a UK dealer, that of our customers and fitters and folded it all in with the perspectives of the design engineers and assembly teams. A comprehensive understanding of machine operation, safety, fabrication, hydraulics, electrical and ancillary items allowed us to take a 360-degree view of the product and maximised added value.
2. The Shop Floor (Gemba!)
The workshop staff have unique knowledge, familiar with the literal nuts and bolts of the product. Listening to their perspective is just as important as providing feedback.
On the second and third day of the visit we stayed in the workshops, inspecting the current machines in build for our UK customers. Through conversation with those who build the mixers we heard ideas they had for more effective assembly and for a better product which was very valuable.
We ran a practical session where the designers and engineers disassembled and re-fitted number of parts to simulate on-site repairs. There’s nothing like hands-on understanding – particularly when not everyone present speaks the same language!
3. Keep it Simple
It’s tried and tested. KCP’s success has come from producing very reliable, simple and long-lasting products. This is exactly why we value KCP as our partner.
The new version of the KC3 Mixer benefits from technology where it adds value, without distracting from the machine’s core functions if there is a fault. As an example, back up manual controls for all hydraulics mean the operator doesn’t need a laptop to get the job done – and can do maintenance in a controlled way ensuring they get the pour done first.
Looking Ahead
KCP now plan to launch the Volumetric Concrete Mixer in the North American market where they have owned a subsidiary since 2006, and as such are making more company resources available to see this product line grow.
On the last few days before heading home we visited their main factory in Seoul to see production of Special Vehicles including vacuum products, parts centre and to meet their CEO and management.
The company has grown from 4 founders in 2001 to over 300 yet still retains a flat structure which makes decision making and dealings efficient and a pleasure to deal with over the years we have worked together. We can’t wait to play a role in their growth in 2024 and beyond.
